Christian Theology
Faith Seeking Understanding: An Introduction to Christian Theology Daniel Migliorebs "Faith Seeking Understanding" has been a standard introduction to Christian theology for more than a decade. The books presentation of traditional doctrine in freshly contemporary ways, its concern to hear and critically engage new voices in theology, and its creative and accessible style have kept it one of the most stimulating, balanced, and readable guides to theology available. This second edition of "Faith Seeking Understanding" features improvements from cover to cover. Besides updating and expanding the entire text of the book, Migliore has added two completely new chapters. The first, Confessing Jesus Christ in Context, explores the unique contributions to Christian theology made by recent theologians working in the African American, Asian American, Latin American, Hispanic, feminist, womanist, and "mujerista" traditions. The second new chapter, The Finality of Jesus Christ and Religious Pluralism, b addresses the growing interest in the relationship of Christianity to other religions and their adherents. Migliorebs three delightful theological dialogues are followed by a new appendix, an extensive glossary of theological terms, making the book even more useful to students seeking to understand the history, themes, and challenges of Christian belief. "Praise for the first edition: " bOne of the best of the new systematic theologies to be published . -- "Religious Studies Review" Migliorebs goal is to present theology in language that can be readily grasped by the theological beginner. Hurrah!b -- "Theology Today" bThis is theology with a sure and sharp pastoral touch. . . . An ideal primer in doctrine for students.b -- "The Expository Times" bA provocative reinterpretation of Christian theology. Migliorebs focus on the new community offers positive insights for theological reflection.b -- "Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society" bAn admirable success. . . .
Faithful Persuasion: In Aid of a Rhetoric of Christian Theology by David S. Cunningham, Over the past twenty years, scholars in a wide variety of academic disciplines have been giving increasing attention to rhetoric - the study of persuasive argument. In Faithful Persuasion David S. Cunningham offers the contemporary era's first sustained account of the relationship between rhetoric and Christian theology. Cunningham argues that Christian thinkers should abandon their attempts to codify argumentation within the canons of formal logic and suggests that they should instead come to a more organic understanding of the process of persuasion. This rhetorical approach to theology can cast new light on longstanding theological controversies and establish a new agenda for the study of the methods, sources, and norms of Christian theology. Drawing chiefly upon the rhetorical insights of Aristotle, and on the reappropriation of Aristotle's views by numerous modern rhetoricians - ranging from John Henry Newman to Kenneth Burke and Chaim Perelman - Cunningham establishes a firm foundation from which to support his central assertion that "Christian theology can best be understood as a form of persuasive argument". In addition, he explores the implications of a rhetorical method for studies in doctrinal formulation, biblical exegesis, and church history. Written for theologians, clergy members, and laypeople with a strong interest in theology, this book will introduce readers to the richness of the rhetorical tradition and its important implications for the discipline of Christian theology.
Christian theology - Christian theology practices theology from a Christian viewpoint or studies Christianity theologically. Given the overwhelming influence exercised by Christianity, especially in pre-modern Europe, Christian theology permeates much of Western culture and often reflects that culture. Narrative theology - Narrative theology was a late 20th century theological development which supported the idea that the Church's use of the Bible should focus on a narrative presentation of the faith, rather than on the development of a systematic theology. The Christian faith is thus also to be interpreted by the Christian community, and not by outside scholars or explorers. Austin Graduate School of Theology - Austin Graduate School of Theology, formerly known as Institute for Christian Studies, is located in Austin, Texas, in the United States of America. It is a private Christian college (although it refers to itself as a seminary, unlike most such institutions associated with the Churches of Christ). Eucharistic theology - Eucharistic theology treats doctrines of the Holy Eucharist. It exists exclusively in Christian and quasi-Christian religions, as others generally do not contain a Eucharistic ceremony.
