Trinity Doctrine in Christianity

the Trinity Guide to the Trinity by William J. La Due,

the Trinity Guide to the Trinity by William J. La Due,
The latest book in the Trinity Guide series takes on a topic that for nearly 2,000 years has generated more misunderstanding among Christians than any other: the doctrine of the Trinity. William La Due provides a brief and comprehensive introduction to the mystery of the Trinity, tracing the evolution of the doctrine from its Old Testament roots to its contemporary expressions. La Due presents a historical survey and authoritative and readable summaries of the work of prominent Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox theologians. He begins with the Old Testament scholarship of theologians such as von Rad and Brueggemann. He then chronicles the doctrine's formulation through the seventh century in church councils and in the writings of the earliest church theologians. He examines the development of the doctrine from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century in the works of theologians such as Aquinas and Schleiermacher. Moving on to the twentieth century, La Due explores the contributions of Catholic thinkers such as Rahner and La Cugna and Protestant theologians such as Barth and Moltmann. Finally, he outlines Orthodox, Liberation, Feminist, and Process contributions to the discussion of the Trinity.

The Spirit of Our Life: Doctrine and Devotion by Alan P. F. Sell,
The Spirit of Our Life: Doctrine and Devotion by Alan P. F. Sell,
Alan P. F. Sell is a scholar and ecumenist who has taught courses, conducted worship, and delivered great lectures in many parts of the world. Following two pastorates and a period in British higher education, he became Theological Secretary of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (Presbyterian and Congregational), Geneva; and then held the Chair of Christian Thought in the University of Calgary, Canada. Since 1992, he has been at The United Theological College in Wales. Throughout the trilogy Doctrine and Devotion the author seeks to communicate the Christian faith and foster a devotion that has implications for daily living. Alan P. F. Sell does this by presenting the major Christian doctrines -- God the Father, Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit -- as they are found in the Bible, as believers have confessed them through the ages, and as they relate to Christian witness at the dawn of a new millennium. The spirit of gentleness and of a rushing mighty wind draws Christians to the fatherly God of holy love and to partnership with Jesus Christ in the church's roles of ministry, mission, and companionship with one another. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity sometimes seems hard to grasp, but in part 3 of Doctrine and Devotion the author not only expands on the importance of Spirit but discusses the interrelationships of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as expressed in worship and in daily life.

Trinity - Within Christianity, the doctrine of the Trinity states that God is a single "Being" who exists, simultaneously and eternally, as a communion of three persons (personae, prosopa): Father (the Source, the Eternal Majesty); the Son (the eternal Logos or Word, incarnate as Jesus of Nazareth); and the Holy Spirit.

Sabellianism - In Christianity, Sabellianism (also known as modalism) is the third-century belief that the three persons of the Trinity are merely different modes or aspects of God, rather than three distinct persons. It is attributed to Sabellius, who taught a form of this doctrine in Rome in the third century.

Trinity Sunday - Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost in the Western Christian liturgical calendar. Trinity Sunday celebrates the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, the three persons of God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Shield of the Trinity - The Shield of the Trinity or Scutum Fidei is a traditional Christian visual symbol which expresses many aspects of the doctrine of the Trinity, summarizing the first part of the Athanasian Creed in a compact diagram. In medieval England and France, this emblem was considered to be the heraldic arms of God (or of the Trinity).
